5 Must-Have Exterior Mods for Your VW Transporter

By Cal|

If you want to transform the look of your VW T5 or T6 without a full-body conversion, these are the five exterior mods that make the biggest visual impact: 1. Sportline front bumper, 2. Side bars or steps, 3. Lowered suspension, 4. Premium alloy wheels, 5. LED lighting upgrade. Each one works on its own, but combine two or three and your van will look completely different to stock.

We fit all of these at our workshop in Brierley Hill and can source quality parts for every budget. Here is what each mod involves and what you can expect to pay.

1. Sportline Front Bumper

The single most effective way to change the face of a Transporter. The Sportline (or Sportline-style) bumper replaces the standard flat-front look with a more aggressive, sculpted design featuring deeper air intakes, integrated fog lamp surrounds, and a lower lip.

Why It Works

It completely changes the front-end proportions. A standard T5 or T5.1 looks utilitarian. Add a Sportline bumper and it immediately looks purposeful and lower, even before you touch the suspension. On the T6/T6.1, the Highline-to-Sportline swap has the same dramatic effect.

Rough Price Range

£300 – £800 depending on whether you go genuine VW or aftermarket, painted or unpainted. Fitting and professional colour-match painting typically adds £200–£400.

What Cal's Offers

We supply and fit Sportline bumpers with full colour-coding to your van. We handle sourcing, painting, and fitting as a complete package — no chasing three separate suppliers. Check our exterior styling services for more.

2. Side Bars & Steps

Side bars (also called rock sliders or running boards) run along the sills beneath the doors. They protect the lower body panels, make getting in and out easier, and add a rugged or sporty profile depending on style.

Why It Works

They fill the visual gap between the wheels and body, making the van look wider and more planted. On a lowered van, short-style bars sit close to the ground and emphasise the drop. On a stock-height van, chunky step bars add a premium SUV feel.

Rough Price Range

£150 – £500 for the bars themselves (stainless, powder-coated black, or colour-coded). Fitting is straightforward — usually 1–2 hours.

What Cal's Offers

We stock a range of side bar styles — from slim sportline-profile bars to full-width side steps with anti-slip treads. All fitted with proper mounting brackets (not self-tappers into sills).

3. Lowered Suspension

Dropping your Transporter 30–60mm transforms the stance entirely. The van goes from top-heavy and van-like to low, purposeful, and car-like. It is the single most impactful mod for the overall silhouette.

Why It Works

Reducing the wheel-to-arch gap tightens the visual proportions and removes the "builder's van" look. Combined with decent wheels, a lowered T5 or T6 looks like a completely different vehicle from stock — and handles noticeably better too.

Rough Price Range

£400 – £4,000 fitted depending on whether you choose static springs, coilovers, or air ride. We have written a detailed cost breakdown covering all options.

What Cal's Offers

Suspension is our core specialism. We are authorised installers for leading suspension brands and have lowered over 500 vans in the last decade. From a subtle 30mm drop to lay-frame air ride — we do it all.

4. Premium Alloy Wheels

Swapping the standard steel wheels (or tired alloys) for a fresh set of premium alloys is one of the most satisfying upgrades. The right wheel design, size, and finish can define the entire character of your build.

Why It Works

Wheels are the most visible component on any vehicle. A set of 18" or 20" alloys with the right offset fills the arches properly and gives the van a planted, intentional look. Dark finishes (gloss black, satin graphite) work particularly well on lowered vans.

Rough Price Range

£600 – £2,500 for a set of four with tyres, depending on brand, size, and tyre choice. Budget options like Calibre or Riviera start around £600. Premium options like OZ, 3SDM, or Rotiform sit higher.

What Cal's Offers

We supply and fit alloy wheels in a range of styles and sizes. We will advise on the right offset and width for your van (especially important on lowered vans to avoid rubbing), and handle balancing and fitting. Serving customers across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands.

5. LED Lighting Upgrade

Replacing the dull halogen headlights and orange indicators with modern LED units brings a Transporter into the current decade. DRL (daytime running light) headlights, smoked LED rear clusters, and LED fog lamps completely modernise the front and rear end.

Why It Works

Lighting is one of the biggest visual differences between a new and old vehicle. LED DRL headlights give a T5 the "face" of a much newer van. Smoked rear lights eliminate the red/orange reflector look and give a cleaner, stealthier appearance from behind.

Rough Price Range

£200 – £1,200 depending on what you upgrade. LED DRL headlights (pair): £300–£800. LED rear clusters: £150–£400. Individual bulb upgrades: £30–£100.

What Cal's Offers

We supply and fit LED lighting upgrades with proper wiring and coding where required (T6/T6.1 headlights often need VCDS coding). No bodge wiring, no error codes, no flickering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which mod gives the most impact for the money?

A suspension drop. Even a budget static drop on springs (from around £400 fitted) transforms the van's stance more than any other single modification. If you can only do one thing, lower it.

Do I need to declare exterior mods to my insurer?

Yes — any modification should be declared to your insurer. Most specialist van insurers are familiar with these upgrades and premiums rarely increase significantly for cosmetic changes. Always declare to avoid policy issues at claim time.

Can these mods be done in stages or do I need to do them all at once?

Absolutely do them in stages. Most of our customers build their vans over months or years, adding one or two mods at a time as budget allows. We are happy to plan a phased build with you — just let us know your priorities and we will suggest the best order.
